Description:

Greece, ca. 500 BCE. This is an orange-red pottery protome showing a face with elaborately styled, flowing hair and clear features including a realistic nose, eyes, and mouth. A protome is a three dimensional mold that would have been part of a vessel, especially a handle; in antiquity, this piece was most likely painted. Size: 4.4" W x 4.5" H (11.2 cm x 11.4 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private M. Reiniger collection, Chicago, IL.
