Description:

Western Greece, Rhodes, Archaic Period, ca. 6th century BCE. A mold-formed faience aryballos in the form of a hedgehog resting atop an integral rectangular plinth. The bulbous body boasts a petite head with circular eyes, ovoid ears, a conical nose, and a plateaued brow, with dozens of latticework striations to create the spiky body. Areas of dark glaze accentuate the facial and bodily features, and the vessel is coated in layers of green and blue-green glaze which creates a wondrous presentation. Vessels like this would have contained oils or other uncommon liquids and would have been seen in great numbers in typical Rhodian domiciles. Size: 1.6" W x 1.7" H (4.1 cm x 4.3 cm).
