Description:

Greece, Classical period, ca. 5th century BCE. A protome bust of a woman, probably Demeter, the goddess of agriculture, the harvest, and fertility. She has a beautifully-modeled face with heavy-lidded eyes, full lips, and thick, center-parted hair. Her bust has rounded shoulders and high, small breasts. There are traces of remaining white pigment on the surface. This was a votive figure, made as a gift to the gods, and would have been displayed in a small altar, perhaps in the home or in a temple or shrine; it may also have been placed into a tree in a sacred grove. Size: 3.5" W x 4.05" H (8.9 cm x 10.3 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex collection of Professor Dr. Gunther Marschall, Hamburg (1913 - 1997), acquired between 1967 and 1975
