Description:

**Originally Listed At $250**

Northern Greece, Thrace, ca. 7th century BCE. This is a beautiful, intact example of one of my favorite artifacts - the spectacle, or double spiral, fibula (brooch). It is created from a single thin strap of bronze twisted around itself. Another, flatter wire is wrapped around the center, creating a double layer. The design of these items was remarkably persistent, and the style dates back to the 13th century BCE. They have been found all over Southern Europe - mostly in the Balkans and south of the Danube and as far afield as Poland, Switzerland, and the western Mediterranean. They were often buried with their owners. Size: 2.95" W x 1.45" H (7.5 cm x 3.7 cm); 2.2" H (5.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, USA collection; ex German private collection, acquired in the 1970s to 1980s
