Description:

Africa, Liberia or Ivory Coast, Dan Peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A compelling trio of miniature Dan masks, expertly carved in dark hardwood, each exhibiting distinct expressions with minimalist stylized features. These small-scale masks were traditionally used as personal talismans carried by men or worn as pendants, serving protective or ritualistic purposes. Each features the characteristic almond-shaped eyes, pursed lips, and elongated oval form associated with classic Dan aesthetics. One example shows signs of age-related wear and patination, possibly indicating ritual use. Provenance: Private collection, United States; acquired prior to 1990. Size: 2.25" W x 4" H (5.7 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: Ralph T. Coe Center for the Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA
