Description:

Ghana. Impressive large Akan memorial head modeled of terracotta, with relief face and scarification, and painted lines at edges in white pigment on disc shaped head. Supported by grooved neck rising from flared base. Part of the base lost. Also, two Ashanti style figures, a bone doll and a modern clay figure. Memorial heads such as this example have at least a 400-year heritage among tha Akan of Ghana where they represent the retainers or a generalized portrait of an important elder, either male or female. They were not positioned on the grave, but placed either in a sacred grove close to the cemetery or in a shrine or stool room where libations and sacrifices were occasionally offered and rituals were performed. Size: 11-1/4" to 7-1/4"H.
