Lot 127
Near East, Holy Land region, ancient Levantine cultures to Roman Empire, ca. 1st millennium BCE to 3rd century CE. A cohesive group of six Holy Land pottery vessels, each shaped by hand in softly rounded forms that speak to everyday life in the ancient Levant. The assemblage includes small jugs, jars, and handled vessels, unified by their pale buff to light terracotta surfaces, mineral inclusions, and subtle firing variations that give each piece a distinct character. These vessels reflect long-standing regional ceramic traditions, where functional shapes were refined over centuries to store, pour, and serve liquids and grains. The gently swelling bodies, short necks, and loop handles emphasize practicality, while traces of surface wear and burial accretions lend the group an authentic archaeological presence. Size of largest (ovoid body): 3.3" L x 2.9" W x 5.9" H (8.4 cm x 7.4 cm x 15 cm)
Viewed together, the lot offers a quiet but compelling cross section of domestic pottery from the Holy Land, objects once held in the hand and woven into daily ritual and routine. Their simplicity, balance, and earthy textures underscore the enduring relationship between clay, craft, and lived experience in the ancient Near East.
