Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. A finely-sculpted figure, hand-carved and string-cut from a mottled grey-green stone (probably andesite), depicting a standing anthropomorphic axe god figure, the human physiognomy displaying appealing stylization. The ancient artisans of this region were particularly adept at reducing the human body to simple, eloquent forms via a meticulous string-cutting technique. Note the stylized rectangular head, cut separation between the legs and hips, and abstract facial features that ironically appeal to a modernist taste for minimalism. Size: 2.2" W x 5.625" H (5.6 cm x 14.3 cm); 6.1" H (15.5 cm) on included custom stand.
