Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A lovely axe god figurine, hand-carved from a mottled forest-green stone with sage-green inclusions. Meticulously polished and sanded smooth, the figure boasts a minimalist stylization comprised of string-cut grooves delineating the arms, legs, and neckline along the body as well as the forehead and mouth on the bulbous head. Size: 1.75" W x 3.625" H (4.4 cm x 9.2 cm).

Provenance: ex-Claude Cassuto collection, France, acquired before 1969
