Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 600 to 100 BCE. A wearable necklace that is strung with 20 hand-carved greenstone beads of mottled verdant, white, brown, beige, gray, and salmon hues. The beads take on a variety of oblong barrel-shaped, discoid, and spool-shaped forms, each with a wide suspension hole drilled through the body. Size (necklace): 26.25" L (66.7 cm); (largest bead): 2.2" L x 1.1" W (5.6 cm x 2.8 cm)

Provenance: private Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA collection; ex-Minerva Gallery; ex-Benjamin Vega, California, USA, acquired in 2006 to 2007; ex-Gene and Virginia George, brought to the USA from 1961 to 1966

  • Condition: Wearable as shown and constructed in modern times. Stone beads are ancient; stringing is modern. Minor nicks and abrasions to some beads, with light earthen deposits, and pitting in scattered areas, otherwise intact and excellent. Great presentation, and some beads with nice surface smoothness.
