Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala, ca. 500 to 100 BCE. A lovely bead depicting a squatting abstract human figure with a large lobed nodule on the back, perhaps a pouch with straps wrapped around the figure's forehead. The figure exhibits highly-stylized features via string-cut grooves delineating the legs, arms, waist, and neck. The tapered head boasts slit-form eyes, a bulbous triangular nose, full lips, and deep nasolabial folds, with a vertically-oriented, biconically-drilled suspension hole through the top and bottom. Faint traces of blue pigment are visible on one side near the hips, and red pigment is visible around the mouth. Size: 1.25" W x 2.625" H (3.2 cm x 6.7 cm).

Provenance: private Massachusetts, USA collection of Kahlil and Jean Gibran. Kahlil Gibran (1922-2008, also known as Kahlil George Gibran) was a successful mid-20th century Magic Realist painter and sculptor.
