Lot 27
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala culture, ca. 500 to 200 BCE. A standing figure carved from mottled greenstone, its elongated, axe-like form recalling the celts or hand axes from which such figures were often adapted. The facial features are rendered in the classic minimalist Mezcala manner: a smooth surface defined only by shallow string-cut incisions for the eyes and mouth, their placement creating the suggestion of a nose between them. A ridge representing the arms curves across a prominent rounded abdomen, a rare feature that may signify fertility, pregnancy, or symbolic abundance. Objects such as this were frequently interred as funerary offerings and later found in ritual caches, including at major temple sites such as the Mexica Templo Mayor. Their continued veneration long after their creation highlights both the enduring significance and the wide exchange networks of Guerrero stone sculpture within ancient Mesoamerica. Size: 2" W x 5.75" H (5.1 cm x 14.6 cm); 6" H (15.2 cm) on included custom stand.
