Description:

Asia, China, Han Dynasty., ca. 206 BCE - 220 CE. Large and quite exceptional green glazed jar. Luminous copper-green lead glaze, this impressive earthenware jar (hu) features a swelling ovoid body rising to a waisted neck and flared lip, its shoulder defined by crisp incised bands and embellished with a molded tāotiè mask gripping a pendent ring - a ceramic evocation of bronze mask-and-ring mounts. Wheel-thrown and joined in sections, then coated with a lead-silicate glaze colored by copper oxide, the surface exhibits attractive variegation with spots of silvery iridescence and burial accretions, hallmarks of Han green wares. Size: 13" D x 15.25" H (33.0 cm D x 38.7 cm H)

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; ex collection of Y. Kayvan, Los Angeles, California, USA, 2025; ex-Barakat Gallery, Beverly Hills, California, USA, acquired between 1985 and 2003
