Description:

East Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. A solemn pottery tomb attendant rendered in kneeling posture, his back straight and arms outstretched to support now-missing wooden limbs. His face, carefully modeled with high cheekbones and a square jaw, bears a faintly furrowed brow and pursed lips beneath arched, painted brows. Traces of original black and red pigment remain, particularly around the collar and belt, emphasizing the formal costume of service. His head is left flattened, as was customary for modular burial figures designed to wear detachable headdresses or accessories. Such figures were interred in tombs to serve and protect the deceased in the afterlife, a tradition that evolved from the Qin to Han periods alongside growing beliefs in elaborate posthumous courts. This example demonstrates the refined realism and stoic dignity that characterize Han dynasty mingqi, or spirit goods. Size: 3.8" L x 4.8" W x 10.5" H (9.7 cm x 12.2 cm x 26.7 cm)
