Description:

Hank (Harry) J. Underhill (American, b. 1949). Two Native American Children Playing in the Sand. Oil on canvas, 1973. Signed and dated at lower right. A quiet, sun-warmed moment unfolds as two Native American children crouch together in the sand, their attention fixed on a simple game that feels as old as time itself. Underhill captures the scene with gentle intimacy, favoring soft transitions of light and earth-toned color that lend the composition a hushed, contemplative mood. The children's patterned garments introduce rhythm and brightness against the subdued ground, while their relaxed postures and shared focus suggest companionship, curiosity, and the unspoken language of play. Painted early in the artist's career, the work reflects Underhill's lifelong interest in observing everyday life and translating fleeting, human moments into enduring images grounded in place and memory. Size of painting: 23.5" W x 19.75" H (59.7 cm x 50.2 cm); of frame: 29" W x 25" H (73.7 cm x 63.5 cm)

About the artist: Hank (Harry) J.
