Description:

Central Asia, Iran, Iron Age II, Hasanlu Period IV, ca. 1150 to 800 BCE. An ancient mace head cast in bronze with a rich green patina formed over centuries through the natural development of malachite and other copper carbonates as the metal reacted with its burial environment. Cylindrical in form, the piece features a central hafting hole surrounded by radiating flanges or spikes, likely intended to maximize impact as well as symbolic visual presence. The upper section is crowned with three knobbed finials - possibly decorative, but also potentially functional, aiding in the secure attachment to a wooden shaft. This mace head could have been a formidable weapon or it may have served as a symbol of rank, authority, or martial prowess. A comparable example is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (Object Number: 60.20.31), which features a similar spiked form and proportions, underscoring the typological consistency and cultural significance of such weapons throughout the greater Levant and Iranian plateau. Size: 3" Diameter x 3.5" H (7.6 cm x 8.9 cm)
