Description:

Hellenistic to Early Roman Period, ca. 2nd century BCE to 1st century CE. An exceptional Greek marble sculpture of an eagle, a sacred symbol of Zeus and enduring emblem of divine power, military valor, and heroic ascent. The bird is portrayed in a vigilant stance, with wings folded neatly at its sides and head raised in solemn authority. The stylized plumage is meticulously carved in layered, incised detail across the chest, wings, and back. The eagle stands atop its original plinth, carved on two faces with remarkably well-preserved ancient Greek inscriptions. These inscriptions record both the dedicants and the honored individual, linking the sculpture to Athenian civic identity and military commemoration. This example’s dual inscriptions—naming both the dedicants and the honored general—make it a rare and valuable document of Athenian military and civic life in the Hellenistic-Roman transition. Size: 21" L x 9.5" W x 24" H (53.3 cm x 24.1 cm x 61 cm)

Inscription (Side Face):"From Demophon, son of Timotheos, and Socrates, son of Herakleides, of Melite — this was made."

Inscription (Front Face):“Phoinix the General, [of the house of Pagelades]... was laid to rest here...”
