Description:

Eastern Mediterranean, Greece, ca. 3rd–1st Century BCE. An exquisite pair of Hellenistic gold earrings, each composed of a rounded hoop from which dangles an elaborate floral or rosette-shaped pendant centered by an oval cabochon garnet. The gem is set within a high bezel surrounded by elegant looped filigree or petal-like extensions, terminating in a curled tendril below. The garnets, now exhibiting rich red coloration with natural dark zoning, are typical of gemstones prized in the Hellenistic period for their protective and decorative value. Size: 1.75" L (4.4 cm). 22K gold, 4.67 grams.

The Hellenistic era saw remarkable advancements in luxury arts under the influence of Alexander’s successors. Gold jewelry became more delicate and ornate, often combining classical motifs with new Eastern styles. This pair likely belonged to a wealthy woman in the Ptolemaic, Seleucid, or Asia Minor regions, where such refined ornaments were worn as status symbols and votive offerings.
