Description:

Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. 323 BCE to 30 BCE. A gorgeous kylix, vessel for drinking wine, with a shallow, flanged body, no rim, and diminutive foot made from an expertly-curved thin strip of silver. The handles are thin sheets of silver that are split halfway up their length into twin cylinders; these split and join the rim, terminating in rounded terminals. Each handle forms a loop from the underside of the bowl to the rim that is perfect for fitting in one finger. Size: 5.25" L x 3.45" W x 1.4" H (13.3 cm x 8.8 cm x 3.6 cm)

Silver would have been a tremendously scarce and valuable material during the Hellenistic period; the rich silver ore mines at Lavrion had stopped producing much around 413 BCE. This kylix may have been made from melted down drachms but would absolutely have been a treasured and elite item.
