Description:

Greece, Hellenistic Period, ca. late 4th century to 1st century BCE. A pretty, mold-made ceramic statuette of a woman, probably made to be votive or placed into a grave. The woman stands, draped in a carefully-depicted, draped and folded himation that she holds with both hands. Her hair is up in a sakkos, a cone-like headdress/coiffure. Nice remaining pigment on the piece gives an idea of what it would have looked like when made, with white over much of the surface and glimmers of pink and blue pigment on the lower part of the himation. Size: 2.05" W x 6.25" H (5.2 cm x 15.9 cm)

Provenance: private Davis Collection, Houston, Texas, USA; ex-Bonhams London Antiquities Auction, 8 May, 2013, part of lot 157; ex-Joseph Klein collection, formed in New York, New York, USA between 1941 and 1980, thence by descent
