Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954). Planche XXXIII (Plate 33) from "Cinquante Dessins par Henri-Matisse" 1920. Edition 427/1000. Signed in the plate lower right. Plate 33 from "Cinquante Dessins" (1920), a book of drawings with an introduction by Charles Vildrac who proclaimed Matisse's return to the figure as an attempt to remedy Modernism's neglect of the figure. This said, Matisse's minimalist linear drawing certainly demonstrated his Modernist approach. "Cinquante Dessins" was written in close collaboration with Matisse, published at the artist's expense, included 50 plates of Matisse's drawings of women along with a frontispiece etching of his daughter Mlle. MM, and it accompanied Matisse's exhibition of drawings at Bernheim-Jeune in 1920. Size (image): 9.375" L x 6.125" W (23.8 cm x 15.6 cm) Size (sight view): 9.875" L x 6.875" W (25.1 cm x 17.5 cm) Size (frame): 18.625" L x 15.75" W (47.3 cm x 40 cm)
One of the founders of Fauvism, Matisse was a leader of "Les Fauves" (wild beasts) - a group of avant garde artists who painted in bold colors, shocking their audiences with their exaggerated hues. During this early modern period, the artistic establishment was offended by their paintings, because they saw the Fauves' use of color as wild and unrestrained. 'Les Fauves' argued that color possessed a spiritual quality that was inextricably connected to emotions, and for this reason, they used the most highly saturated colors. Furthermore, rather than use color to describe their subject matter in a naturalistic way, color was intended to express the artist's feelings about his/her subject. These ideas liberated future generations of artists to explore color in modernist compositions.
