Description:

Henry Moore (British, 1898-1986). "Seated Woman" etching, 1967-8. Edition 17 of 20. Signature and edition number handwritten in pencil in lower margin. A powerful example of Henry Moore's enduring exploration of the human form, "Seated Woman" distills the monumental presence of his sculpture into the intimate scale of an etching. Rendered with bold yet fluid lines, the figure's abstracted geometry conveys both solidity and vulnerability, qualities that Moore often sought in his depictions of the human body. The seated posture recalls his lifelong engagement with archetypal themes such as the mother and child and the reclining figure, while the simplified contours evoke the organic monumentality of his bronze and stone carvings. Produced during the late 1960s, when Moore was widely recognized as the leading sculptor of his generation, this print exemplifies his ability to translate sculptural form into graphic media with equal resonance. Size of etching: 4.75" W x 7.5" H (12.1 cm x 19 cm); of frame: 14.75" W x 18.25" H (37.5 cm x 46.4 cm)

About the artist: Henry Moore was one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century, celebrated worldwide for redefining modern sculpture. Best known for his monumental bronze works, Moore also created carvings, drawings, prints, textiles, and tapestries. His art, inspired by the human body and organic forms, often explored enduring themes such as the reclining figure, mother and child, and the relationship between internal and external structures.

Born in Castleford, Yorkshire, in 1898, Moore knew from an early age that he wanted to be a sculptor. After serving in the First World War, he studied at Leeds School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, establishing himself in the 1920s and 1930s as a leading voice of the European avant-garde.

During the Second World War, Moore produced his celebrated "Shelter Drawings," poignant depictions of Londoners seeking refuge in the Underground during the Blitz. These works brought him widespread recognition and laid the foundation for his postwar public commissions, including the 1943 "Madonna and Child" for St. Matthew's Church, Northampton. In the decades that followed, Moore created major sculptures for civic spaces across Britain and abroad, notably his "Reclining Figure" for UNESCO in Paris and the monumental "Reclining Figure" for Lincoln Center in New York.

By the 1960s, Moore had achieved international renown, his organic, often abstract forms exhibited and installed across the globe. His work was the subject of major retrospectives at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, Tate, and the Forte di Belvedere in Florence.

In 1977, Moore founded the Henry Moore Foundation to support public enjoyment of the arts, especially sculpture. He continued to work until his death in 1986 at Perry Green, Hertfordshire, which remains the home of the Foundation today.
