Description:

Europe, England, "The Pass of Atbara in Abyssinia" color aquatint, drawn by Henry Salt (English, 1785-1827), engraved by Daniel Havell, published by William Miller, 1809. Identification of title, artist, and engraver in border below with No. XIX in lower right. A hand-finished color aquatint after a drawing by Henry Salt, regarded as one of the finest artists to visit Ethiopia in the first half of the 19th century. Salt was an Egyptologist, born in Lichfield, Staffordshire, who studied Classics and went to London's Royal Academy Antique School. This composition features a well-executed perspectival landscape with three figures in the foreground, one riding a donkey, and several groups of nearly invisible staffage figures in the middle ground. The Pass of Atbara is located in Northwest Ethiopia on the Nile River and is quite scenic as shown in this depiction. Size: image measures 16.5" L x 23.5" W (41.9 cm x 59.7 cm); sheet measures 20" L x 25" W (50.8 cm x 63.5 cm)

Salt was appointed secretary and draughtsman to Viscount Valentia following a meeting with George Annesley, the second Earl of Mountnorris. He then accompanied the Earl to India and the area of the Red Sea. During this trip in 1805, he also made his first visit to the Ethiopian highlands, including the ancient city of Aksum. Salt’s drawings were published in Valentia's "Voyages and Travels to India" in 1809.
