Description:

Central Asia, Nepal / Tibet, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A serene brass image of White Tara, the goddess of compassion and longevity, standing gracefully upon a tiered lotus pedestal. She is adorned with elaborate jewelry and a high, foliate crown inlaid with enamel, her softly draped lower garment finely incised with delicate floral motifs. Her right hand is raised in the gesture of reassurance (abhaya mudra), while the left is lowered. Each thumb and forefinger delicately holds a lotus stem, from which full blossoms rise beside her shoulders - symbols of her purity, enlightenment, and transcendent wisdom. Cast in several pieces, the figure is not permanently attached to the base; her feet are fitted with tenons that slot into holes cut into the pedestal, the lotus flowers rest within small metal loops, and the topknot finial is separately attached. Size: 10" W x 34" H (25.4 cm x 86.4 cm)

Provenance: private Anahola, Hawaii, USA collection, acquired 1970s to 1990s
