Description:

Possibly European, ca. 1st to 15th century CE. A group of three cast copper alloy objects with flat, blade-like forms, possibly intended for use as tools or weapons. Their irregular shapes and worn edges suggest prolonged use and weathering, while the green patina indicates long-term exposure and oxidation. Although we were told these originated from the Midwestern Native American "Old Copper Culture," XRF analysis revealed elevated levels of lead (up to 18%) and low levels of tin - an alloy composition inconsistent with pre-Columbian Native American metallurgy, which employed only cold-hammered native copper without alloying. Given the presence of lead, tin, and traces of silver, these pieces are more likely of Old World or colonial manufacture, possibly related to agricultural work or combat applications. Size of largest: 7.5" L x 3" W (19 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: ex-Jasper collection, Illinois, USA; ex-Dennis Herr collection; ex-Leland Mast collection
