Description:

Zuni Pueblo. Ca. 1900 - 1920. century. Small pottery jar depicting a Kachina head of a bull, with curved horns and projecting cylindrical eyes. An ear of corn is painted on the reverse. Small jars, such as this one, probably had no function in a pueblo household. They were most likely made for sale to village visitors, collectors and museums. C. G. Wallace, trader at Zuni, encouraged potters to make exotic vessels that looked like they had a ceremonial function. This small bowl, fits the bill for one that appears to have a pueblo ceremonial function. Intact. Size: 2-7/8"H. x 4"W.

Provenance: Blumberg collection, NYC. Collection acquired 1980's-2000's, mostly from Santa Fe dealers. Inv. # M2661.
