Description:

Southeast Asia, Hmong Peoples, ca. mid to late 20th century. A large and vibrant textile hanging, masterfully created from hemp and cotton, featuring indigo-dyed batik panels accented with colorful commercial cotton appliques, embroidery, and quilted stitching. The central field showcases the traditional batik wax-resist technique, where melted wax is applied in patterns before dyeing, leaving behind intricate linear motifs in white upon rich shades of deep indigo. Flanking this are colorful bands of geometric applique and embroidered decoration in bright reds, blues, greens, and whites, forming a dynamic contrast against the dark ground. This expansive cloth is mounted for display on a wooden dowel rod with beaded suspension cords, presenting it as a ready-to-hang tapestry. The Hmong people, who inhabit regions of Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, and southern China, are renowned for their textile artistry, with batik and applique works often serving ceremonial, dowry, or household functions. Size: 65.5" L x 36" W (166.4 cm x 91.4 cm)
