Description:

Greece/Cyprus, Late Bronze Age, ca. late second millennium BCE. A beautiful ceramic grey ware jug, wheel-made with a rolled stamp decoration around the lower body of stippling and arrows in a deep border. A tiny round foot, narrow spout, and flared rim give clues as to its purpose - made to be carried onboard ships, transporting oil, which needed the narrow neck to prevent evaporation and the wide mouth to prevent spillage. A thin strap handle falls at a right angle from just below the rim to the shoulder. This type of pottery probably originated in Cyprus, but was traded throughout ancient Greece and especially Anatolia, with similar examples documented from Troy. Size: 3.5" W x 5.7" H (8.9 cm x 14.5 cm)
