Native American, central/eastern United States, Ohio and surrounding areas, Hopewell Indians, ca. 100 BCE to 400 CE. A fine statuette of a standing woman, hand-carved from a mottled grey stone with black, brown, and maroon inclusions. The woman stands on fused, attenuated legs, has bent arms held tightly against a knee-length dress, and boasts smooth shoulders which taper seamlessly into a thick neck. Dramatically-tilted almond eyes, a slender nose, incised lips, and smooth cheeks comprise her stylized countenance, and two hair lobes flank the sides of her neatly-arranged coiffure. Custom wooden display stand included. Size: 1.25" W x 2.75" H (3.2 cm x 7 cm); 3.4" H (8.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
