Description:

Waldine Lomahoema (Native American, Hopi, 1924-2009), Coil Basket, ca. 1995 CE. A large coiled basket created by Hopi basketmaker Waldine Lomahoema of Shungopavi Village, Second Mesa, Arizona. The vessel features finely coiled construction with vivid figural designs, including traditional kachina imagery in red, black, and yellow against a cream ground, framed by geometric bands. The basket comes with a printed photo of Lomahoema herself, captured mid-process while working on this very piece, showing it partially completed at the stage of the lower register of triangles. Both an object of cultural heritage and an artwork of striking visual presence, this basket embodies the enduring artistry of Hopi coiling traditions. Size: 11" Diameter x 12" H (27.9 cm x 30.5 cm)

Provenance: private Salt Lake City, Utah, USA collection, bought directly from the maker Waldine Lomahoema, Shungopavi Village, Second Mesa, Arizona, USA, 1995
