Native American, Southwestern United States, Hopi, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. Signed "HO / James" and an indecipherable word on underside of proper right foot. A wonderful cottonwood sculpture of the Kokopolo or the Hump-backed Flute Player kachina adorned with vibrant pigments, plumage, yarn, rope, and animal sinew. Wearing a helmet mask with prominent red ears, an up-turned beak, and broad collar, Kokopolo dances with a long feather in one hand and prominent hump on his back. Kachina figures are meant as gifts for children representing kachina dancers and the supernatural kachina beings they embody, and are part of the Pueblo tradition, which includes the Hopi and the Zuni tribes. Size: 3.8" W x 7.6" H (9.7 cm x 19.3 cm)

- Condition: Signed "HO / James" and an indecipherable word on underside of proper right foot. Possible loss of object in proper left hand. Light surface wear commensurate with age with some minor chipping to pigments in areas and fraying of feathers. Otherwise, mostly intact and excellent. Nice pigments and light patina.
