Description:

Hopi. b. 1955 ca. 2000. Polychrome decorated pottery jar having a classic Sikyatki shape with a wide shoulder and slightly sloping sides. Beautifully decorated with four abstract birds. Signed on the base with his name and the Mudhead symbol, or Koyemsi. This is reflective of his Hopi-Tewa clan. Intact, exc. cond. A beautiful example. According to the King Gallery: "Steve Lucas (b.1955) is a great-great-grandson of Nampeyo of Hano. His grandmother was Rachel Nampeyo, and his great-grandmother was Annie Healing. He primarily learned the art from his aunt, Dextra Quotskuyva Nampeyo. The pottery is coil-built, stone-polished, traditionally painted, and native-fired. Steve uses traditional designs and often gives his own creative spin to the ancient imagery." Steve Lucas has won numerous awards for his pottery, including "Best of Show" at Santa Fe Indian Market. In addition, Steve is a featured artist in the book by the gallery owner, Charles S. King, 'Spoken Through Clay.' Size: 9"W. x 4-1/2"H.
