Lot 78B
Attributed to Jimmy Koots, also known as James Kootshongsie (Native American, Hopi Pueblo, 1916-1996). A weathered wooden plank carved in low relief with the radiating visage of Tawa, the Hopi Sun God. The circular face is framed by incised triangular rays, with geometric features defining the eyes, mouth, and forehead. Traces of yellow and black pigments remain faintly in the facial quadrants, their tones softened by decades of natural wear and exposure. Purportedly a discarded or experimental piece by noted Third Mesa katsina carver Jimmy Koots, it may have functioned as a practice carving, a trial design, or as a decorative component intended for furniture incorporating Pueblo motifs. Size: 28.5" L x 9.5" W (72.4 cm x 24.1 cm)
Provenance: Ralph T. Coe Center for the Arts, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA; acquired in 1996 from Taylor Dale (TAD) Gallery, Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, found in a storage room at the Koots house.
