Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 600 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery vessel of a charming form depicting a recumbent dog laying with its legs stretched out to one side. The highly burnished canine features a coffee-brown body decorated with large white spots, a conical spout atop the hind legs, and a stirrup-shaped strap handle arching from the spout to the raised head. The alert countenance is composed of almond-shaped eyes with brown pupils, a tapered snout with delineated nostrils, a bared mouth with rows of fangs, and a pair of perky ears. Size: 5.4" L x 4.2" H (13.7 cm x 10.7 cm)
