Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central/South Peru, Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. A hand-built pottery jar of a sizable form with a round but stable base, a spherical body with a slight central carination, and a cylindrical spout. The highly burnished exterior presents two broad, salmon-hued panels separated by thick white lines, each with a pair of highly abstract monkey figures that appear to be flying. Each strange simian features a semicircular head, curved limbs with white paws, and an oddly contorted body that creates an expressive presentation. Size: 7.5" W x 9.2" H (19 cm x 23.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-private T. Misenhimer collection, Beverly Hills, California, USA, collected from 1970-2008
