Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Huari (Wari), ca. 700 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery stirrup vessel with a flat base, a gradually expanding base, a hemispheric upper body, and a pair of projecting conical spouts with a stirrup-style handle arching in-between. Each half of the brown-slipped vessel boasts an intricately detailed avian head on either half that wears an elaborate headdress and is surrounded by three ears of corn. The heads of the falcon god feature an advanced degree of abstraction characteristic of Huari ceramics, yet they still reference lifeforms inspired by the natural environment and ritualistic customs. Size: 6.75" W x 5.4" H (17.1 cm x 13.7 cm).
