Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Wari (Huari), ca. 500 to 1000 CE. A lovely textile headband fragment comprised of tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of citrine, wheat, teal, fuchsia, maroon, and chocolate. The headband is composed of a singular lengthy strap, the base of a second strap, and a wide panel to place across one's forehead. The illustration on the central panel depicts a series of eight abstract avian figures which are arranged into groups of four and separated by square panels of interlocking rhombus-shaped forms with interior crosses. Mounted on a fabric backing. Size (headband): 24.125" W x 2.5" H (61.3 cm x 6.4 cm); size (backing): 38" W x 15.75" H (96.5 cm x 40 cm).
