Huari. Ca. 800 - 1000 A.D. Fine carved hardwood ear ornament depicting the head of a dignitary, having high relief carved angular facial features, beautifully inset with mother-of-pearl, spondylus shell and turquoise cut plaques. Wearing a tall inset block type crown, integral solid hardwood spool insertion tang on the reverse. Most of the insets seem to be original to the piece, it is possible that some of the mother-of-pearl lower border plaques might be replacements, otherwise intact, exc. cond. A high quality, rare and beautiful example. Custom display base. Size: 1-3/4"H. x 1-3/8"W. x 2-3/8"L.
Provenance: Collection of a NYC. physician. Acquired early 1980's from Jean-Eugene Lions, Geneva.
