Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Huastec / Aztec, ca. 1200 to 1400 CE. A dramatic earthenware mask, its human visage presenting large, ovoid eyes with arched brows, a pronounced nose, and full lips parted to reveal a few teeth - highly decorated with a grand headband comprised of numerous projecting 'beads', a nose ring, and ear ornaments (all with losses as shown). Notice that this mask does not possess eye holes; this was a common practice as masks were often created for display as elements of rituals, or in death as a death mask, rather than to be worn. That said, this example was probably not a death mask as its eyes are open. Instead it may have represented a deity, sometimes used for worship of that god, displayed in a temple, or worn by a priest. Ceramic masks like this example are quite rare. Lucite stand. Size: 7.5" W x 9" H (19 cm x 22.9 cm); 15.25" H (38.7 cm) on included custom stand.
