Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Huastec culture, ca. 900 to 1450 CE. A finely modeled pottery figure of a seated female, shown bare-chested with her hands set firmly upon her hips in a commanding pose. She wears a short loincloth and is adorned with a tall, tiered headdress and large circular earspools. Her features are rendered with hallmark Huastec stylization: slender, almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, and a slightly parted mouth exposing the teeth. The torso bears an incised navel, while the full breasts are exposed, underscoring her fertility and life-giving role. She sits upon a low stool, a detail that suggests status and formality. Huastec sculptors were renowned for their naturalistic yet expressive depictions of the human body, particularly in female figures which often conveyed ideals of fertility, beauty, and power. Size: 3.75" W x 8.5" H (9.5 cm x 21.6 cm)
This example, with its erect posture and hands on hips, projects a sense of strength and authority, perhaps representing a goddess, priestess, or revered ancestor. Figures such as this were typically placed in domestic shrines or burials as protective or intercessory presences, linking the human and divine realms.
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report will accompany the item upon purchase.
