Description:

**Originally Listed At $1500**

Central Asia, southern India, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. A huge brass urli, a cooking pot made for use during a festival. Two looped handles flow downward from the slightly flared rim. The neck is slightly corseted, with several ridges and inwardly-curving bands around it; then it broadens out to a wide shoulder before tapering to a shallow bowl. Four small nubs on the base act as feet. In places around the shoulder are beautifully stamped Tamil words. The word "urli" comes from Tamil, meaning a round bowl. These large bowls are found in many homes in this region as well as in Sri Lanka, where they are used for cooking on special occasions requiring large meals. Size: 32.25" L x 30" W x 10" H (81.9 cm x 76.2 cm x 25.4 cm); 17.75" H (45.1 cm) on included custom stand.
