West Africa, Burkina Faso, Lobi peoples, ca. early 20th century CE. A forged-iron ceremonial sword of an enormous form known as a takouba (also takoba). The double-edged blade exhibits a lengthy form with a shallow midrib and sharpened edges that taper gradually to a rounded tip. The rectangular hand guard is formed from red-brown leather and has a vertical central crest that separates a pair of black-painted stars on each half. The cylindrical, leather-wrapped handle provides for a slightly textured surface that is easy to grip and is topped with a discoid brass pommel. Size: 36.5" L x 4.6" W (92.7 cm x 11.7 cm)
