Description:

Near East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 12th to 15th century CE. A massive marble stamp, carved in the form of a disc with a projecting handle. The handle has a large perforation at its center for suspension and is capped by a hexagonal finial. Around the back of the stamp, the disc has a deeply incised series of concentric rings. The edges are rounded. On the other side, the stamp's face, there is a circular band of Greek text around a wide interior circle which has a cross surmounted by a starburst form. Eight horizontal lines of Greek text surround the cross. Soil deposits on the marble have given it a warm glow with age. Size: 7.5" W x 3" H (19 cm x 7.6 cm)

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Janet & George Zakos collection, Geneva, Switzerland 1970s
