Chancay. Ca. 1000 - 1250 A.D. composed of two tightly woven multicolor panels, each in slit-tapestry in wool, with an overall lively and vivid undulating zig-zag pattern of six stylized serpents, each body bordered by two rows of striding birds, the lower edge with two double bands with continous rows of birds, the bottom row forming a tab fringe terminating in triple segments, all in shades of bright and pale pink, mustard yellow, greenish-yellow, cream, lavender, black and brown. Some scattered normal light fading and a few minor professional repairs, otherwise generally exc. cond. Sewn to a cloth backing on a wooden stretcher and mounted in a custom plexiglas box frame. Size: 35-1/4"W. x 54-1/2"H.

Provenance: Collection of Assen and Christine Nicolov, Darien, CT. To family by descent. Acquired at Sotheby's, New York, May 18, 2000, lot 31. Ex. Bradley Reifler, NYC. Acquired from The Merrin Gallery, NYC. Published in the Sotheby's catalog with a half page color photo and on the inside front and rear covers in black and white.
