Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. An unusual and very large blackware vessel presenting an enormous orb-shaped round-bottomed body, a cylindrical slightly flared neck, and most intriguingly, a hollow arched form emerging from one shoulder that appears quite bird-like with a long curved neck and delineated short beak. In the Pre-Columbian world, birds were highly symbolic and favorite iconographical subjects in art. As sky animals, they were associated with the celestial sun and moon and were believed to act as messengers between humankind and their deities. Size: 15.25" W x 14.75" H (38.7 cm x 37.5 cm)
