Description:

Magna Graecia, Southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 5th to 4th centuries BCE. A red-figure Apulian skyphos of an enormous scale, quite rare to find an example this large! The iconographic program on Side A depicts a striding Eros with magnificently detailed wings, bedecked with beaded jewels and a fanciful diadem. In his right hand, Eros presents a dedicatory offering to an altar; in his left hand he holds a wreath. On Side B, the painter depicted a bejeweled female attendant in flowing robes, presenting a fan in her right hand and a tambourine in her left hand. The side walls are further adorned with intricately delineated palmettes. The entire scene is framed by a register of egg-and-dart patterning above and below, a register decorated with a wave motif. Size: 12-1/4"H (31.12 cm)x 11-1/2" in diameter (29.21 cm). Provenance: Ex-private Ketchum, Idaho collection, acquired at major auction houses and galleries before 2004. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #108395
