Description:

North America, Western United States, Montana, Fort Union Formation, Paleocene period, ca. 66 to 56 million years ago. A large fossilized leaf attributed to the prehistoric sycamore Macginitiea nobilis (formerly Platanus nobilis), displaying a broad, multi-lobed form with clearly articulated primary and secondary venation. The leaf presents in a rich reddish-brown hue that stands out against the pale cream matrix. The overall symmetry and well-defined lobes are characteristic of Paleocene sycamore leaves from the Fort Union Formation. Specimens of this type date to a period of flourishing temperate forests that spread across western North America following the extinction of the dinosaurs, making this an impressive and decorative example of early Paleocene plant life. Size: 13" L x 11" W (33 cm x 27.9 cm); 12" H (30.5 cm) on included custom stand.
