Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chuquibamba, ca. 1000 to 1450 CE. From a very little known or understood culture from southern Peru called Chuquibamba. Very large multicolor woven panel of classic Peruvian design consisting of 208 small rectangular panels, each containing four diagonal rows of semiabstract birds. Some with fish and several panels containing two vertical rows of birds. Each panel bordered with a multi-color step decoration. Professionally sewn to a brown linen backing on a wooden stretcher. All 4 selvedges are intact, an indication this was a single large shawl or tunic. A large and impressive example. Size: 97" L x 41" W (246.4 cm x 104.1 cm)

The Chuquibamba culture flourished in the Andean highlands of southern Peru between roughly the 11th and 15th centuries CE, in the transitional region between the coastal Arequipa valleys and the altiplano. Renowned for its masterful weaving, Chuquibamba artisans produced some of the most intricate and colorful pre-Columbian textiles, distinguished by finely spun camelid fibers, complex geometric patterning, and bold, contrasting dyes derived from native plants and cochineal.
