Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A hand-blown oinochoe comprised of translucent pale green glass with a curvaceous silhouette characterized by a corseted body leading to an attenuated neck that extends to a broad funnel mouth, and a pronounced flared bottom upon a concave base. Most dramatic is the thick, wide trailed strap handle pulled up high from the shoulders, redirected downward and upward, and tooled so as to create the impression of a beaked bird head looking up toward the celestial realm. Though repaired from multiple pieces, the graceful form and expert technique required to create this piece are still impressive. Furthermore, time has also contributed to its aesthetic as mineral deposits and rainbow iridescence have added to its charm. Size: 4.5" in diameter x 12.125" H (11.4 cm x 30.8 cm)
