Description:

Eastern Europe / Central Asia, Hungary, Bronze Age, ca. 7th to 5th century BCE. A hefty cast bronze axe head with a slightly-flared blade, sharply-angled sides, a thick neck, and a rounded collar. The head is socketed, with a circular opening for a handle. There is a recessed teardrop-shaped design on one side of the blade with a small perforation, perhaps to hold a medallion or other adornment in place. The hollow socket was a technological innovation, allowing economical use of bronze while still making a strong weapon. Size: 5" L (12.7 cm); 4.625" H (11.7 cm) on included custom stand.
